Choose the Mirrors That Love You Back

Choose the Mirrors That Love You Back

This morning, as I was getting ready for work, I moved from one mirror to another — from the bathroom mirror to the bedroom mirror, where the lighting was completely different. It wasn’t intentional. I simply walked over to open the blinds before leaving for the day.

And then something interesting happened.

In that small, ordinary moment, I had a little philosophical epiphany.

I looked at myself in the second mirror and thought, “Wow… I look so incredibly different in both mirrors.” One reflection made me feel beautiful and confident. The other seemed to highlight every imperfection and insecurity I’ve ever noticed about myself.

Almost instantly, my mind shifted from mirrors… to people.

People are the human mirrors in our lives.

Some people reflect back beauty, love, encouragement, and belonging. They make us feel seen, valued, and safe to be ourselves. Others reflect judgment, criticism, insecurity, or indifference, leaving us questioning our worth in ways we may not even realize.

Standing there this morning, moving from mirror A to mirror B with absolutely no deeper intention behind it, I made a quiet decision: mirror B would not determine my day.

It would not erase the joy, peace, and confidence I felt moments earlier when mirror A reflected back a kinder message:

You are beautiful. You are loved.

And maybe that’s true in life too.

Not every reflection we encounter deserves authority over how we see ourselves.

The people we choose to surround ourselves with matter deeply. If you constantly feel your energy drained in someone’s presence… if you feel unseen, unwelcome, misunderstood, judged, or emotionally small around them… maybe it’s okay to walk toward another mirror. One that reflects back the goodness, beauty, strength, and light already living inside of you — and perhaps even reminds you of qualities you’ve forgotten you possess.

Life is brief. Fragile. A collection of ordinary moments that quietly shape us.

May we hold it with both hands.
May we choose relationships rooted in kindness, love, and authenticity.
And may we surround ourselves with people who reflect back not our fears and insecurities, but the beauty of who we truly are — just like that first mirror I looked into this morning before stepping out into the day.
