Late Bloomers
I came across Late Bloomers on Prime. I had never heard of the movie before, and I didn’t recognize any of the actors either, but somehow, it had a good vibe. So I gave it a chance—and I’m so glad I did.
Released in 2023, Late Bloomers tells the story of Louise (Karen Gillan), a 28-year-old aspiring musician living in Brooklyn, New York. From the beginning, it’s pretty obvious that Louise is struggling with life in general. She’s carrying the pain of a broken heart from a previous relationship, trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life, and navigating family dynamics filled with unresolved issues.
But even through all of Louise’s brokenness and messiness, you can sense that underneath it all is a wonderful and beautiful human being who is simply craving acceptance, opportunity, connection, and love.
Then, by fate, she crosses paths with Antonina (Margaret Sophie Stein), a bad-tempered, argumentative, and very uncooperative elderly Polish woman who speaks no English at all. Louise speaks no Polish, so the two have to figure out how to communicate with each other.
And somehow, they do.
Not necessarily through words, but through the language of understanding, respect, patience, and eventually love. Most importantly, they begin to truly see each other—beyond their frustrations, brokenness, circumstances, and even their dreams.
But the story goes far beyond the relationship between Louise and Antonina. It digs deeply into family dynamics, our relationships with aging parents, and what it means to foster those relationships as life changes and, often, as we find ourselves caring for the people who once cared for us.
It also explores something we can probably all relate to in one way or another: growing up doesn’t necessarily happen at a particular age. Sometimes we are still figuring ourselves out, healing old wounds, learning to forgive, and discovering who we want to be long after the world thinks we should already have it all figured out.
Late Bloomers is a soul-filled film that explores what being human is all about—and what it really means to grow up.
This movie will make you laugh, ponder, and yes, it will probably make you cry too. I loved the story, the characters, and the unexpected tenderness throughout the film. I thought it was absolutely beautiful. ❤️
